Anger Management :: Assertiveness Training :: Bereavement Counselling :: Counselling ~ Face to Face :: Psychotherapy :: Stress ManagementTelling our own stories is one of the main ways in which we make sense of our own experiences, and of the world around us. We need someone who can listen calmly and supportively in order to feel safe and 'heard'.
Counselling is a bit like looking in a mirror. Until we see ourselves reflected back, we don't know that our clothes need adjusting, or our that our hair needs to be tidied in just that place.
As you share your story with me, I may offer insights or reflections on what I understand you to be saying. Through this way of being together, you may discover all sorts of interesting things about yourself, as well as discover skills, resources, and routes to making adjustments that you didn't realise you could make!
These resources are often hidden from view to ourselves until we discover them with the skilled help of another person.
I aim to be qietly sensitive and very respectful of you and of the stories you bring. I like to build a sense of safety so that you can feel less anxious, and I will also encourage you to notice what is going well in your life!
I use a combination of principles like CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). Briefly, the main principle of CBT is that when we change the way we think about life events, we change the way we behave around those events, and when we behave differently there is inevitably a different outcome.
I also use Sensoimotor Psychotherapy principles, where we pay attention not only to thoughts, we include awarness of sensations, movements and feelings that arise in our bodies in response to events. Awareness of these responses can build up a clearer picture of how we 'tick' , lead to valuable insights and open the doors for creative changes by doing things differently.
